Martin had been an active umpire for many years, even prior to the founding of the East Umpires Association in 1971. He was ever willing to help out and will be sadly missed at Carlton, where he was a great stalwart, and by all who knew him. Another sad loss for Scottish cricket. Duncan Walker has penned this appreciation of Martin.

Jim was a towering figure amongst Scottish umpires, both on the field and as a trainer and mentor of a generation of umpires that followed him.
